Vinay Kaushal’s Jazzy Pop tune Is It Sunny? shines with his own prowess and Shakthisree Gopalan’s vocals: Score Indie Reviews

Guitarist and composer Vinay Kaushal‘s new track is titled Is It Sunny? (with a question mark adding to the ominous tone of the writing). The title comes from the song’s hook in which the protagonist asks their lover if it’s sunny or if it’s raining, because nothing matters and every day feels the same when the lover is not beside the protagonist.

Written by Uma Athale, the song is a poignant set of mellow thoughts from a lover’s perspective who’s probably longing for their partner in times of distance. The feelings of loneliness are expressed beautifully in how the character keeps on asking the partner about each and everything, from when they woke up to whom they talked to, and so on.

These lyrics are of course, brought to life by Shakthisree Gopalan’s bold, unwavering voice. The song follows a largely linear arrangement in its 5 minute duration, with a few catchy guitar solos by Vinay Kaushal. The song feels like a pop ballad but it’s far from your “generic” indie love song. Kaushal adds elements of jazz and it shows, especially with  Agneya Chikte’s drumming. The song is smooth sounding, thoughtfully written, and is worthy of being played on repeat despite its duration.

If this wasn’t enough, a visual accompanies the song featuring acclaimed pole artist Nupur Chaudhuri. As the song plays, she gives her interpretation of Is It Sunny with her impeccable skills boasting her flexibility and smoothness.

Verdict: A serene blend of jazz and pop.
