In the words of K. Dharini, member of the core committee, Svanubhava is merely a platform to form a community among like-minded musicians, to create a sense of belonging. And one cannot underestimate the need for a sentiment like that in these times when young patrons of traditional music forms are, to say the least, a minority.
This is the 4th consecutive year of the festival and this time, it will be held on a national level with two prime venues – Kalakshetra in Chennai & The Gandharva Mahavidyalaya in Delhi. Until this time, the festival was a Chennai based event that took place in the month of August.
It was hosted only at art institutions like the Madras Music Academy, Kalakshetra, the Government Music College & also, a few public schools; a potpourri of Indian fine arts – all of which happened simultaneously in these different venues.
But this time, it will be like a mini cultural exchange programme for the student performers!
Students from Delhi will get to perform in Chennai & vice versa. This is also why a single venue has been decided to streamline the crowd and also, to enable the debut at Delhi to be smoother.
About the Chennai venue, Kalakshetra is ‘beauty personified’. The Svanubhava Committee express their heartfelt gratitude to Ms. Leela Samson, Director of the school for her cooperation and guidance
‘Delhi has a separate organizing committee that handles the artist coordination & scheduling & Chennai supports from the back end. All the members of the Chennai core committee will be showing their support in Delhi as well’, confirms Dhaarini.
The students who have been religiously attending Svanubhava come from various performing art schools, public & private institutions. Many students living abroad also make it a point to attend the annual event. But that said, this is no elitist fare. In fact, artists explain what they do and engage in an interactive Q&A session after performances.
Dhaarini explains that there is something for everyone and even as I try to get her to name any one event that is especially not to miss, like a true organizer she diplomatically reassures me that Svanubhava is indeed musical diversity at its best and the kind of variety that one will see in these three days is unparalleled.
