Youthful Angst and Rock Guitars unite in Mission: Recovery’s RIOT: Score Indie Reviews

The rapper known as Mission: Recovery (aka Vishal Pisharoti) had displayed his prowess in the rapcore genre with his album Origin that was released last September. Now, his new single RIOT finds him exploring his brand of rap and rock yet again, in quite an amusing way.

RIOT is definitely a conceptual project for the artist as he not only raps and growls throughout the track but also directs and edits the video that’s heavy on fiery computer-generated visual effects. Making use of protest footage and his own furious closeup-shots, he captures the angst of his vocals that are further highlighted by pumped-up guitaring by the late Sam Michael.

The ones who had streamed the rapper’s aforementioned album would know Mission: Recovery’s close connection with Michael, a talented guitarist and a close friend of his. With a screeching chorus, heavy guitaring, and Mission: Recovery’s angsty verses, he seems to be exploring further the realms of nu-metal or rapcore. This might just end up being the artist’s niche and RIOT bears testimony to this, making him sound a bit like Mike Shinoda from Linkin Park. This however doesn’t imply that RIOT sounds like a Linkin Park song; it’s pretty original in its own right.

The lyrics capture his feelings as an ‘antivist’ and how he feels like doing nothing but ‘riot’ in a hopeless system. The political undertones get quite evident as the song also makes good use of snippets from a speech by American activist Mario Savio (who was known for his highly-rousing political speeches).

The song’s chorus that finds Mission: Recovery saying nothing but ‘It’s time to RIOT’ is definitely one of the most impactful portions. It might not suit everyone’s taste, especially if they have gotten over metal-inspired growls and raging vocals, moving over to a preferred ‘chilled-out’ sound. At the same time, RIOT seems like a fresh entry in the oversaturated rap-rock experimental genre tried out by a few Indian artists in the English-language.

Verdict: A worthy rap/rock statement of human infuriation, boosted by a highly-powerful chorus and guitar-driven production.
