Mallika Mehta is a singer-songwriter, performer who has been given the moniker of ‘Adele of Mumbai’ by leading international media. She is an alumna of Berklee College of Music, Harvard University, Kellogg University and NYU. Over the course of her career, she has released some fantastic indie tracks and has also opened for renowned Bollywood artists like Kailash Kher and Shankar Ehsaan & Loy. The Mumbai songstress is back with her latest track “Keh Bhi De” and that’s what we are reviewing here.

“Keh Bhi De” is a pop/contemporary pop Hindi single. It has been written and composed keeping in mind the frustration, desperation and restlessness one feels when their lover does not accept or admit their feelings in spite of being in love. “Keh Bhi De” is a very simple yet a very important facet of an array of emotions –  ‘tell the person you love, that you love them’.  It’s been written acoustically on the keyboard but is a very dramatic song in terms of lyrics and melody. 

There’s a refreshing purity and strength to Mallika Mehta’s vocal phrasing that locks in perfectly with the modern sounding beats on the track. In just a little over four minutes, she illustrates a relationship that isn’t always perfect, but during that time the music and her incredible voice leave you transfixed. There’s pain and there’s beauty, not always in equal measure, yet there’s enough of both to make you realize you’ve heard a unique voice that has come through both and still feels that there’s a song worth singing.

If you are familiar with Mallika Mehta’s previous work, you would’ve noticed that she always sings with a lot of confidence and poise. This is clearly an artist who has faith in her abilities. However, to succeed as an indie artist, just having faith isn’t enough, you need to have talent too. “Keh Bhi De” continues to prove that Mallika Mehta has plenty of both.

Verdict: Heartfelt.
