Euphoria – Dhoom Pichuk / Maaeri
Euphoria is one band which has consistently produced good music till date. Maaeri was a beautiful song about a man telling his mother about his lost love. Dhoom Pichuk Dhoom, from their first album Dhoom, gave them the required recognition.
Falguni Pathak – Yaad Piya Ki Aane Lagi
Rightfully known as the ‘Garba Queen’, Falguni Pathak gave an entire new spin to Indipop with her westernized Gujarati folk songs. The other memorable ones are ‘Maine Payal Hain Chankayi’ & ‘Indhna Vinva Gai Thi’.
KK – Pyar Ke Pal
KK’s anthem taught us to appreciate every moment in life. Another hit Yaaron taught us to appreciate friendship. They were the perfect songs to croon to while sitting at the beach with your group of close friends.
Lucky Ali – O Sanam
The song ‘O Sanam‘ from Lucky Ali’s first album Sunoh is considered to be one of the best indipop songs ever. Sunoh established him as an icon in the Indian music scene. The album was a phenomenal success. Remember the picturesque Egyptian pyramids shot beautifully with Lucky Ali’s soothing voice? Sunoh broke all records by selling close to 4.5 million albums worldwide.
Malkit Singh – Gur Naal Ishq Mitha
Remember Jas Arora & Malaika Arora-Khan dancing to the trademark hand gestures of this extremely successful Punjabi pop song? This one went on to become the unofficial wedding song and can still be heard at festivities.
Sagarika – Disco Deewane
The 1996 Nazia Hassan cover sung by Sagarika in the album Naujawan brought disco pop back to India. Sagarika was amongst the first indipop singers and started her career as a part of Shaan-Sagarika with her brother Shaan before going solo and eventually disappearing.
Shankar Mahadevan – Breathless
This crazy song was supposedly sung in a single breath by the maestro Shankar Mahadevan. Upon it’s release, the craze of this song was contagious. It gave him major fame and resulted in the start of a long musical journey.
Sonu Niigam – Tu / Ab Mujhe Raat Din
Sonu Niigam became a well known name after his popular single ‘Tu’. Every album of his till date has been extremely well received. Aside from his albums, one need not mention his success in Bollywood – the day would probably finish while listing his successful songs.
Suneeta Rao – Kesariya Hai Roop / Pari Hoon Main
Pari Hoon Main gave Suneeta Rao the name ‘Pari of the Masses’. She rose to fame with her album Dhuan way back in 1991.
Tu Mera India – Wajah Muskurane Ki
One of the best song and video ever made to commemorate 50 years of Indian independence, it featured an amalgamation of Indian artists paying a tribute to their motherland. Daler Mehndi, Shaan, Sagarika, Suneeta Rao, Stylebhai, Anu Malik, my favorite Hema Sardesai, Sonu Niigam etc. all in one song! This song sums up my article in the best way possible.
