What kind of music can you expect from a suspense thriller like Aamir Khan’s Talaash?
Since Ram Sampath is the composer, one can undoubtedly expect some interesting tunes – if nothing else – and that is precisely what you get with the first song promo, Muskaanein Jhooti Hai.

Starting off on a rather retro note, Ram eventually introduces a haunting cabaret-esque tangent to the song. He manages to maintain an ominous feeling throughout the song – partly thanks to the seductive voice of Suman Shridhar (of Shaitan’s Khoya Khoya Chand & Hawa Hawai fame). Also, the impending sense of doom prevalent throughout the song did take me by surprise. Moreover, what truly makes the song kick-ass is the simple instrumentation. Lyrics by Javed Akhtar just add to the mysterious element.
Sample this:
“Raat mein hi jaagti hain yeh gunaahon ke ghar,
Inki raahein khole baahein jo bhi aaye idhar.
Yeh hai gumraahon ka rasta,
Muskaanein jhooti hai, pehchanein jhooti hai.”
At this rate, you might think that I feel the song is absolutely perfect.
No!
Muskaanein Jhooti Hai suffers from its own share of flaws. Firstly, Lady déjà vu refused to leave my side. Also, I detected vague similarities to Daastan-E-Om from Farah Khan’s Om Shanti Om, as well as, the title track of the TV series Kkavyanjali (both of which can be heard between 1:14 & 1:28 mins in the above video).
Eitherway, Muskaanein Jhooti Hai is the perfect track to kickstart the promotions of Talaash and I am eagerly awaiting the album.
