Review: Rishab Rikhiram Sharma turned Chennai into a meditative storm of sound

On April 3, 2026, Rishab Rikhiram Sharma brought his Sitar for Mental Health tour to the Jawaharlal Nehru Indoor Badminton Academy, Chennai, and what unfolded over the next two and a half hours was nothing short of transformative. The Chennai stop was part of his wider India tour and carried the same promise of immersive, emotionally charged sonic healing that the tour has become known for.

From the moment audiences arrived, the evening felt thoughtfully planned. For a venue of this scale, the parking and entry flow were surprisingly smooth, making the pre-show experience stress-free and setting the right tone before the first note was even played. It may seem like a small detail, but good concert logistics often define how open an audience is to the experience ahead, and this show got that absolutely right.

Once the lights dimmed, the venue transformed into a deeply immersive sonic space. Rishab’s performance had the rare ability to feel both intimate and monumental. Through his sitar, he didn’t simply perform songs, he transported the audience through landscapes of emotion and imagination. One moment you were grounded in stillness, the next you were lifted into something almost celestial. The journey truly felt like being taken from Kailash to the Himalayas, a spiritual and cinematic movement through sound that stayed with the audience long after each piece ended.

The setlist smartly balanced fan-favourite compositions and emotionally expansive live moments, allowing the audience to move between familiarity and surprise. Every popular piece was met with a wave of recognition, but what truly stood out was how each track evolved in the live setting, growing into something larger, more intense, and far more personal.

One of the most beautiful sights of the night was the diversity of the audience. From children and college students to families, working professionals, and older classical listeners, people from all age groups came together in complete surrender to the music. That kind of cross-generational pull is rare, and it speaks volumes about the emotional accessibility of Rishab’s work.

The accompanying musicians deserve special mention. Every artist on stage brought precision, chemistry, and depth to the performance. What elevated the night even further was that each supporting artist had a solo spotlight moment, and every solo landed with impact. These weren’t filler interludes, they were thoughtfully placed extensions of the evening’s emotional architecture, giving the set dynamic range and fresh momentum.

What made the Chennai concert truly unforgettable was how fully immersed the crowd remained throughout the 2.5-hour runtime. There was no dip in energy, no wandering attention, just thousands of people completely locked into the sound, the atmosphere, and the emotional release it offered.

Overall, this was an amazing live experience in the truest sense: beautifully organised, musically mind-blowing, emotionally rich, and powerfully inclusive. Chennai didn’t just witness a concert that night, it witnessed a collective sonic journey.
