Katrina Blazin’ In Agneepath – WIN?

‘Aayi Chikni Chameli, chhup ke akeli, pahua chadha ke aayi’
The much-awaited over-hyped supposed ‘maa-baap’ of item songs (when is it not!), from the forthcoming movie Agneepath, is finally out.

Composed by musical duo of Atul-Ajay, this one’s called ‘Chikni Chameli’ (which literally means ‘smooth jasmine’). For those of you who do not know, siblings Atul Gogavale and Ajay Gogavale are National Film awardees who’ve delivered some super-hit songs in the Marathi film industry.

So, Katrina Kaif is back in an all-new-avatar (really?) with yet-another item song after ‘Sheila Ki Jawani’. With a ‘pahua’ (quarter) swinging by her hip, Katrina does go crazy with her raw-sexuality infused gyrations.

But the song wouldn’t have been the same without the versatile Shreya Ghoshal’s singing. After a scintillating ‘Ooo la la’ from ‘The Dirty Picture’, the singer delivers and how? The song is an official Hindi version of Ajay-Atul’s previous Marathi song ‘Kombadi Palali’. Major brownie points for originality I must say.

Bichhu mere naina, badi zehereeli ankh maare,

Kamsin kamariya saali, ik thumke se lakh maare

Note hazaaron ke, khulla chhutta karaane aayi,

Husn ki teeli se, beedi-chillam jalaane aayi,

Aayi  chikni chameli chhup ke akeli pahua chadha ke aayi

The song stays true to the item song stereotypes. Overflowing with blatant cheesiness, it has everything from a jungle, a sher, a machhli, a bichhoo to some makhan, a beedi and even a tijori! The song continues to blow me with its originality. Add some heavy Indian percussions and a Lavani setting and voila! That’s ‘Chikni Chameli’ for you in a nutshell.

But credit must be given where it’s due. Once again, Shreya Ghosal is brilliant. She really makes you want to shake your booty. The song by itself is mediocre yet oh-so-addictive. A special mention to Katrina Kaif for her irresistible dancing. This one’s a chartbuster all the way.

As Shreya sings “Yeh toh trailer hai poori phillum dikhane aayi”, stay tuned for more on Ajay-Atul as well as the music of Agneepath
