Homi Adajania’s latest venture Cocktail has been generating some serious buzz. Why shouldn’t it?
The first look of the man’s 2nd flick (after 2006’s Being Cyrus) seems to portray the movie as a fresh take on the beautiful bond of friendship amidst the complicated entanglement of love. Sure, the premise sounds a bit clichéd (a friendly Ménage à trois – not in the literal sense), but hey! You shouldn’t judge a book by its cover, right?
Anyway, the first song promo, titled Tumhi Ho Bandhu, is out.
Those who have seen the theatrical trailer of Cocktail would identify with the highly addictive chants of “Tumhi Ho Bandhu, Sakha Tumhi” which plays throughout the runtime of the trailer. Obviously, this promo is the extended version of the aforementioned song.

Composed by the ‘music guru’ Pritam, the song expectedly opens up with fast-paced familiar techno beats. Thankfully, the reticent Kavita Seth makes a rare appearance behind the microphone with this song. Judging by this promo, she is the only saving grace of this track. Once again, Neeraj Shridhar has been relegated to his comfort zone with the usual mass-appealing commercial songs – latest case-in-point being Tumhi Ho Bandhu. I swear his accent during the rendition of the English lyrics seem to be getting faker with each progressing song. It seems to be directly proportional to the amount of hair color on his scalp. Yowzah!
Also, on careful listening, one can pin-point distinct similarities with his own Subah Hone Na De from Desi Boyz. Hell, it seems to be a mash-up of all his previous hits. Yet, credit must be given where due. Pritam is THE man to go for instant (and addictive) chartbusters – and he scores yet again. For once, let us make this mutually exclusive of his plagiarism.

I would like to specially mention Irshad Kamil (the lyricist) for penning the meaningful, identifiable lyrics:
“Yaara tere sadke ishq sikha main toh,
Aayi jad taj ke ishq sikha,

Jug mujhpe lagaaye pabandi,

Now, all we have to do now is wait for the soundtrack of Cocktail to hit the stores to see what else Pritam has in store for us.
