The scene for independent music in India got a further boost with Radio One’s One Mumbai, One Music concert. Aimed at promoting fresh talent, Radio One seems perfectly poised to take center stage in this growing wave in the months to come.
One Mumbai, One Music started out as a radio show that played a lot of non-Bollywood music and featured bands and independent artistes. Under the same initiative Radio One hosted its first concert ron the 10th of May. Padma Bhushan awardee Jagjit Singh headlined the concert and Shriram Iyer, the budding singer of Shor In The City, opened the act.
At a time when most erstwhile veteran musicians are thronging to Bollywood for survival and independent music is not at its peak, the initiative proves all is not lost as yet. Alisha Chinoy best known for her phenomenal single Made in India commented saying “Such offerings are very encouraging for the artistes giving them the much required platform and giving a boost to the almost diminishing Indi pop genre”. She is perhaps the best person to make this judgement having been a witness to both the intial heyday of Indi-Pop and its subsequent degeneration.
Radio One’s Mumbai station manager, Kiran D’Cruz told RadioandMusic.com, “One Mumbai, One Music is a national concept where we provide a platform for budding artistes to showcase their talent on-air… and the concert is an on ground extension of the show.” The independent music scene definitely seems to be making a comeback this season.
