Coke Studio. A show with no mentors, no anchors, no judges and no voting. Its an hour of nothing but music.
Coke Studio, a music property owned by beverage giant Coca-Cola, is set to premiere in India this June. Its a platform where musicians from various genres can perform together and record the resulting collaboration on the spot.
Commenting on the announcement, Aditya Swamy – channel head, MTV India, said, “Coke Studio@ MTV expresses the diversity of India through the language of music. People today want to experience music in its raw form and a live recording is just that. An opportunity to do something so special comes around once in a lifetime and we at MTV are excited about leading a musical revolution”.
Every hour long episode of Coke Studio at MTV features 6 songs – a diverse mix of music from alternative genres including Carnatic and Hindustani, compositions by new musicians, recreated Bollywood tracks, and a special song created on the show! The collaborations are so eclectic as to bring together Shafqat Ali and Shruti Pathak, Sunidhi Chauhan and Wadali Brothers, Kailash Kher and Papon, Shankar Mahadevan and Khogen Da, and Bombay Jayshree, Richa Sharma and Rashid Khan among others. And the result – a divine fusion of music that embraces the essence of India.
The show’s musical director, Leslie Lewis, said Coke Studio will be “another direction for the music in this country”. Coke Studio isn’t a reality show. So there are no mentors, no anchors, no judges and no voting. It’s just live music that has been recorded from the beginning to the end. I didn’t allow artists to patch up later or make corrections.”
The show has not been aired yet and people are already tweeting and talking about it. If good music is what you like, this show is for you.
Watch Coke Studio starting June 17 at 7.00 pm on MTV.
