Zakir Hussain, the tabla virtuoso, turns 62 today.
I could list an extensive and detailed account of his achievements and awards, but Zakir Hussain doesn’t need any of that.
From acoustically sound concert halls to the blaring television sets in our living rooms, to our music loving hearts- the tabla maestro has managed to carve himself a permanent niche, from which he dazzles us every now and then. Let it be his stunning work with Remembering Shakti or the viral Taj Mahal tea commercial, which made him synonymous with the phrase ‘Wah Taj!’.
One of his numerous genius traits is that he has never constricted himself to one type of music. Present generation will probably associate Zakir Hussain and the tabla with something droll and old. But the video below shows that he’s not scared to experiment with the alien strains of fusion. The song is from his album, Making music, featuring Jan Garbarek, John McLaughlin and Hariprasad Chaurasia
